   This article presents a new structure of a sliding mode disturbance observer (SM-DOB) for handling model uncertainty and unmodeled disturbances. The proposed SM-DOB is composed of two key components. First, a Levant’s differentiator is used to estimate the high-order time derivatives of the output. To satisfy the conditions required for the effective operation of Levant’s differentiator, we employ an integral SM technique so that on the sliding surface, the real plant’s dynamics are substituted with the nominal dynamics. With this structure, the proposed SM-DOB can achieve robust disturbance rejection and recover nominal performance in finite time. The stability and the finite time convergence of the proposed SM-DOB are rigorously proved by the Lyapunov stability method. Finally, to show the superiority and verify the validity of the proposed SM-DOB, we conduct both numerical simulations and laboratory experiments with brushless dc (BLdc) motor drives. It is observed that the proposed SM-DOB guarantees satisfactory performance in rejecting both input disturbance and plant uncertainty while remaining robust in the presence of noisy measurement.

   This paper studies the distributed mode computing problem in a multi-agent system, in which each individual agent possesses a certain attribute and the agent group aims to agree upon the mode (the most frequent attribute owned by the agents) via distributed computing. Two algorithms are proposed, the first one estimates the frequency of all attributes at every agent, and then identifies the most frequent attribute as the mode; the second is based on a distributed consensus protocol that renders all the agents agreeing on an attribute whose frequency is no less than a given threshold. This protocol is then used as the main building block to compute the mode via a branch-and-bound algorithm. Analysis of both algorithms establishes finite time convergence and is based on the blended dynamics approach.

   Robust disturbance rejection for uncertain linear system with time-varying exo-system: A disturbance observer approach

   This paper addresses the problem of completely eliminating modeled disturbance that enters linear minimum-phase systems having parametric uncertainty and is generated by a linear time-varying exo-system. Motivated by the internal model principle (IMP), the core is to append a filter in front of the plant, such that (a) the disturbance model is embedded into the filter dynamics and (b) the filter is of minimum phase. Then the cascade connection of the plant and the filter is robustly stabilized by employing a disturbance observer (DOB)-based controller. In addition to simplicity in the design over the existing IMP-based approaches, the proposed controller also enjoys benefits of the DOB techniques, such as robustness against large parametric uncertainty and additional unmodeled disturbance, and guaranteeing a pre-defined nominal tracking performance in both transient and steady-state. Stability and performance of the controller are analyzed by the singular perturbation theory.

   Stability of linear systems with slow and fast time variation and switching: General case

   This paper studies exponential stability of linear systems with slow and fast time variation and switching. We use averaging to eliminate the fast dynamics and only retain the slow dynamics. We then use a recent stability criterion for slowly time-varying and switched systems, combined with perturbation analysis, to prove stability of the original system. The analysis involves working with an impulsive system in new coordinates, which enables us to treat a more general class of systems compared to previous work.

   Singularly Perturbed Hybrid Systems for Analysis of Networks with Frequently Switching Graphs

   For a class of hybrid systems, where jumps occur frequently, we analyze the stability of system trajectories in view of singularly perturbed dynamics. The specific model we consider comprises an interconnection of two hybrid subsystems, a timer which triggers the jumps, and some discrete variables to determine the index of the jump maps. The flow equations of these variables are singularly perturbed differential equations and, in particular, a smaller value of the singular perturbation parameter leads to an increase in the frequency of the jump instants. For the limiting value of this parameter, we consider a decomposition that comprises a quasi-steady-state system modeled by a differential equation without any jumps and a boundary-layer system described by purely discrete dynamics. Under appropriate assumptions on the quasi-steady-state system and the boundary-layer system, we derive results showing practical stability of a compact attractor when the jumps occur sufficiently often. As an application of our results, we discuss the control design problem in a network of second-order continuous-time coupled oscillators, where each agent communicates the information about its position to some of its neighbors at discrete times. Using the results developed in this article, we show that if the union of the communication graphs being used for information exchange between agents is connected, then the oscillators achieve practical consensus.

   A Distributed Observer Accommodating a Broad Range of Intermittent Communication Scenarios

   This paper proposes a distributed observer that utilizes intermittent communication and accommodates a broad range of scenarios, including asynchronous operation, unidirectional communication, packet loss, and communication delays. An analysis over jointly connected switching topology supports this and provides a condition for exponential convergence of the estimation error. This condition can be used to determine a communication rate. The analysis is valid when the unobservable subspace of each agent admits an invariant orthogonal complement. This is a property that is always achievable via a coordinate transformation when the system matrix is diagonalizable over the complex field.

   Data-driven displacement-based formation control with range-only measurements

   This paper proposes an algorithm to coordinate a displacement-based formation of a multi-agent system when their local frames are not aligned. Agents can measure neither the relative positions nor orientations, but only the range (distance) to their neighbors. We demonstrate that persistently exciting data exchanged between two agents can be used to infer relative positions and orientations. In the proposed method, we address discrete-time distributed orientation estimation based on an averaging consensus protocol. An asymptotic stability analysis of the desired formation shape is presented and the proposed strategy is validated through simulation results.

   Adaptation of Parameters in Heterogeneous Multi-agent Systems

   This paper proposes an adaptation mechanism for heterogeneous multi-agent systems to align the agents’ internal parameters, based on enforced consensus through strong couplings. Unlike homogeneous systems, where exact consensus is attainable, the heterogeneity in node dynamics precludes perfect synchronization. Nonetheless, previous work has demonstrated that strong coupling can induce approximate consensus, whereby the agents exhibit emergent collective behavior governed by the so-called blended dynamics. Building on this observation, we introduce an adaptation law that gradually aligns the internal parameters of agents without requiring direct parameter communication. The proposed method reuses the same coupling signal employed for state synchronization, which may result in a biologically or sociologically plausible adaptation process. Under a persistent excitation condition, we prove that the linearly parametrized vector fields of the agents converge to each other, thereby making the dynamics asymptotically homogeneous, and leading to exact consensus of the state variables.

   A polynomial-based QCQP solver for encrypted optimization

   In this paper, we present a novel method for solving a class of quadratically constrained quadratic optimization problems using only additions and multiplications. This approach enables solving constrained optimization problems on private data since the operations involved are compatible with the capabilities of homomorphic encryption schemes. To solve the constrained optimization problem, a sequence of polynomial penalty functions of increasing degree is introduced, which are sufficiently steep at the boundary of the feasible set. Adding the penalty function to the original cost function creates a sequence of unconstrained optimization problems whose minimizer always lies in the admissible set and converges to the minimizer of the constrained problem. A gradient descent method is used to generate a sequence of iterates associated with these problems. For the algorithm, it is shown that the iterate converges to a minimizer of the original problem, and the feasible set is positively invariant under the iteration. Finally, the method is demonstrated on an illustrative cryptographic problem, finding the smaller value of two numbers, and the encrypted implementability is discussed.

   This paper presents a distributed Q-learning (DQ-learning) algorithm within the framework of Multi-agent Markov Decision Process characterized by heterogeneous state transition probabilities and a common reward function. By communicating during learning, each agents experiencing different state transition probabilities, do not converge to their own local optimal Q-functions. Instead, the interaction forces their learning dynamics to align, and every agent converges to the optimal Q-function corresponding to the average over these heterogeneous state transition probabilities. Further analyzing its behavior, we reformulate the update algorithm of DQ-learning as a continuous time dynamics using modified ODE based stochastic approximation. Through the blended dynamics approach, the asymptotics of such dynamics is analyzed, theoretically guaranteeing the emergent behavior of DQ-learning.

   Abstract In this paper, we study the problem of maintaining a stable mobile robot formation, steering and localizing all robots in an unknown dynamic environment consisting of multiple periodically moving objects, without the presence of a global positioning system or a robot tracking system. We propose a distributed observer such that each agent can estimate global positions of all mobile robots and that of moving landmarks in an unknown environment. By combining the proposed distributed observer with the distributed formation control and centroid tracking control law, we show that the formation shape can be maintained by utilizing its available relative measurements and the estimated relative measurements to its neighbors, and the group’s centroid follows a desired trajectory. We present stability analysis of the closed‐loop system. Finally, we validate the proposed methods in a simulation result where a group of mobile robots can maintain a robust formation and maneuver in an unknown dynamic environment.

   Abstract Asymptotic output tracking of non‐minimum phase (NMP) nonlinear systems has been a popular topic in control theory and applications. Many approaches have focused on finding solutions under minimal assumptions either in the target system or desired trajectories, as there is no general solution available. In this article, we propose a practical and simple solution for cases where the reference trajectory is periodic in time. Our approach employs a learning‐based scheme to iteratively determine the desired feedforward input. Unlike previous learning‐based frameworks, our method only requires the output tracking error to update the feedforward input iteratively and can be applicable to NMP systems. Our method retains the key advantages of the learning‐based framework, including robustness to parameter uncertainties and periodic disturbances. We evaluate the effectiveness of our algorithm using simulation results with an inverted pendulum on a cart, a typical NMP nonlinear system.

   A group behavior of a heterogeneous multi-agent system is studied which obeys an “average of individual vector fields” under strong couplings among the agents. Under stability of the averaged dynamics (not asking stability of individual agents), the behavior of heterogeneous multi-agent system can be estimated by the solution to the averaged dynamics. A following idea is to “design” individual agent’s dynamics such that the averaged dynamics performs the desired task. A few applications are discussed including estimation of the number of agents in a network, distributed least-squares or median solver, distributed optimization, distributed state estimation, and robust synchronization of coupled oscillators. Since stability of the averaged dynamics makes the initial conditions forgotten as time goes on, these algorithms are initialization-free and suitable for plug-and-play operation. At last, nonlinear couplings are also considered, which potentially asserts that enforced synchronization gives rise to an emergent behavior of a heterogeneous multi-agent system.

   This chapter presents an overview of actuator attacks that exploit zero dynamics, and countermeasures against them. First, zero-dynamics attack is reintroduced based on a canonical representation called normal form. Then it is shown that the target dynamic system is at elevated risk if the associated zero dynamics is unstable. From there on, several questions are raised in series to ensure when the target system is immune to an attack of this kind. The first question is: Is the target system secure from zero-dynamics attack if it does not have any unstable zeros? An answer provided for this question is: No, the target system may still be at risk due to another attack surface emerging in the process of implementation. This is followed by a series of questions, and in the course of providing answers, variants of the classic zero-dynamics attack are presented, from which the vulnerability of the target system is explored in depth. In the end, countermeasures are proposed to render the attack ineffective. Because it is known that zero dynamics in continuous-time systems cannot be modified by feedback, the main idea of the countermeasure is to relocate any unstable zero to a stable region in the stage of digital implementation through modified digital samplers and holders. Adversaries can still attack actuators, but due to the relocated zeros, they are of little use in damaging the target system.

   Summary In this article, the problem of robust output feedback stabilization of single‐input single‐output nonlinear systems is studied in the event‐triggering framework. In this work, an event‐triggered output feedback law based on a high‐gain observer is constructed, which guarantees the stability of closed‐loop system. First, the high‐gain observer with a triggering scheme is designed to estimate the plant state in the presence of external disturbances subject to any satisfactory accuracy of the estimation error. The observer‐based triggering mechanism decides the transmission of plant output to the observer by observing a certain event condition. Similarly, another triggering mechanism is designed using the estimated state of observer that triggers the control signal to be updated only when it is satisfied. Under this proposed event‐triggering framework, the stability of closed‐loop system is then analyzed. Here, we provide the simplified design technique, in which the high‐gain parameter and the triggering thresholds can be selected independently to achieve any desired bound for the plant trajectory. The results are finally demonstrated through simulation of a numerical example.

   Disturbance observer is an inner-loop output-feedback controller whose role is to reject external disturbances and to make the outer-loop baseline controller robust against plant’s uncertainties. Therefore, the closed-loop system with the DOB approximates the nominal closed-loop by the baseline controller and the nominal plant model with no disturbances. This article presents how the disturbance observer works under what conditions, and how one can design a disturbance observer to guarantee robust stability and to recover the nominal performance not only in the steady-state but also for the transient response under large uncertainty and disturbance.

   Significant concerns on networked control systems are modifications on the control signals caused by a compromise on the network or the controller, since it can cause a devastating behavior or even entire failure of the system. In this paper, we present a fundamental solution to this problem by proposing a new authenticated computation that checks the matrix-vector multiplications-the main arithmetic of a controller-and verifies the updates on the states of the controller. It enables the plant-side not only to check the computation of the controller with much less computational cost than that required for the computation itself, but also to detect any modifications on the control signals.

    This paper presents a distributed algorithm for additive aggregation over encrypted data. Our algorithm allows networked systems to compute the sum of all individual data without revealing each node’s private contribution. To conceal the private data, the local computations on each node and the communications with neighbor nodes are conducted by utilizing the additively homomorphic cryptosystem. As a consequence, the leader node which has the secret key of the cryptosystem recovers the correct outcome after decryption in a finite time. Moreover, the leader cannot learn the private data of the other nodes. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can operate on encrypted data for an infinite time horizon even when the network varies intermittently with time.

   This study discovers a new vulnerability of cyber‐physical systems to malicious attack. It arises when the physical plant, that is modelled as a continuous‐time LTI system, is controlled by a digital controller with periodic sampling and actuation. In the sampled‐data framework, most anomaly detectors monitor the plant’s output only at discrete time instants. Consequently, abnormal behaviour between sampling instants cannot be detected if output behaves normally at every sampling instant. This implies that if an actuator attack drives the plant’s state to pass through the kernel of the output matrix at each sensing time, then the attack compromises the system while remaining stealthy. It is shown that this type of attack always exists when the sampled‐data system has an input redundancy, i.e. the number of inputs being larger than that of outputs and/or the sampling rate of the actuators being higher than that of the sensors. Simulation results for the X‐38 vehicle and other numerical examples illustrate this new attack strategy may result in disastrous consequences.

   This paper addresses the problem of state estimation for linear dynamic systems that is resilient against malicious attacks on sensors. By “resiliency” we mean the capability of correctly estimating the state despite external attacks. We propose a state estimation with a bank of observers combined through median operations and show that the proposed method is resilient in the sense that estimated states asymptotically converge to the true state despite attacks on sensors. In addition, the effect of sensor noise and process disturbance is also considered. For bounded sensor noise and process disturbance, the proposed method eliminates the effect of attack and achieves state estimation error within a bound proportional to those of sensor noise and disturbance. While existing methods are computationally heavy because online solution of nonconvex optimization is needed, the proposed approach is computationally efficient by using median operation in the place of the optimization. It should be pointed out that the proposed method requires the system states being observable with every sensor, which is not a necessary condition for the existing methods. From resilient system design point of view, however, this fact may not be critical because sensors can be chosen for resiliency in the design stage. The gained computational efficiency helps real-time implementation in practice.

   Two-dimensional (2-D) time-space diagram have been widely used to analyze the flow of the traffic. However, it has limitations to make a plan that guarantees the collision avoidance of vehicles at the intersections. In this paper, we introduce the three-dimensional (3-D) time-space diagram and demonstrate its effectiveness in describing the movements of vehicles at the intersections. We also propose an algorithm based on the grid allocation of 3-D time-space diagram to avoid collision between vehicles to achieve the autonomous intersection.

   This study presents an off‐the‐shelf error feedback controller that can completely rejects the sinusoidal disturbances whose magnitudes, phases, bias, frequencies and even the number of frequencies are all unknown. A closed‐form solution is given under the assumptions that the plant has no uncertainty and has hyperbolic zero dynamics (i.e. there is no zero on the imaginary axis of the complex plane), and that the number of unknown frequencies has upper bound which is known. A non‐minimum phase plant can be dealt with. The proposed controller is tested by a simulation, which verifies its effectiveness.

   The disturbance‐observer‐based control (DOBC) is a well‐known robust control scheme and recently its non‐linear version has been developed. Observing that two components (so‐called Q‐filters) in the conventional DOBC structure have the same transfer function, the authors propose a reduced‐order DOBC for uncertain non‐linear systems. It is shown that the proposed controller also guarantees the same robust transient response as those developed before. Numerical simulations using a magnetic levitation system are included to illustrate the detailed design procedure and validate the performance of the proposed controller.

   SUMMARY This paper presents a sufficient condition for observability of continuous‐time switched nonlinear systems that also involve state jumps. Without the assumption of observability of individual modes, the sufficient condition is based on gathering partial information from each mode so that the state is completely recovered after several switchings. Based on the sufficient condition, a hybrid‐type observer is designed, which comprises a copy of the actual plant and an error correction scheme at discrete time instants. In order to execute the proposed design, the observable component of the state at each mode needs to be estimated without transients or ‘peaking’ (caused by high‐gain observers), and this motivates us to introduce a back‐and‐forth estimation technique. Under the assumption of persistent switching, analysis shows that the estimate thus generated converges asymptotically to the actual state of the system.    Consensus problem for high-order multi-agent systems is considered under deterministic and Markovian switching topologies. Only relative output information of agents is assumed to be available through the networks. First, a necessary and sufficient condition for achieving a consensus under a fixed communication network is presented. Based on this result and the stability of switched systems, a high-order multi-agent system with the proposed low-gain controller is shown to reach a consensus under deterministic switching network if the total time when the network is disconnected is, in some senses, smaller than the total time of the network being connected. Furthermore, the conditions sufficient for a high-order multi-agent system to reach an almost sure and mean-square consensus, under Markovian switching networks, are presented. Finally, illustrative examples are given to demonstrate the results.

   This paper studies practical consensus (PC) problem for linear multi-agent systems (MAS) under a fixed, connected, and undirected communication network. PC means that the difference between any two agents remains in an arbitrarily chosen neighborhood of the origin after some time by using a suitable control law. All the agents, which are heterogeneous first-order linear time-varying (LTV) systems, can collect only relative state information from their neighborhoods. According to the assumptions of MAS, we divide the problem into two cases; one is a class of homogeneous LTV MAS with heterogeneous disturbances where the difference between any two disturbances is bounded, and the other is a class of heterogeneous LTV MAS with heterogeneous bounded disturbances. Finally, we show that PC for each case is always achieved if the control gain is sufficiently large.

   In industrial applications, the disturbance observer (DOB) approach has been widely used due to its robustness and simple structure, and its results in a continuous-time fashion are frequently encountered in many literatures. Although most of DOBs are implemented in a discrete-time form with digital devices, a rigorous analysis on the discrete-time DOB is still insufficient compared to the continuous-time DOB. Therefore, in this paper, we mainly focus on the application of the DOB to discrete-time systems and some phenomena that are not observed in continuous-time systems. In particular, the time constant of the discrete-time Q-filter should have a lower bound, while the continuous-time DOB does not have this constraint. The time constant to sampling time ratio of the discrete-time Q-filter plays a crucial role in the discrete-time DOB, and it is suggested that this ratio be one for stability. Based on the above analysis, a new design method of the discrete-time Q-filter using a delay function is proposed. Furthermore, a robust stability condition for discrete-time systems using the delay function Q-filter is presented. Finally, simulation with an optical disk drive (ODD) model demonstrates the effectiveness of the newly proposed Q-filter.

   In this paper we present three extended results on the stability property with slowly varying inputs that has been studied in, e.g., Khalil and Kokotovic (1991). The stability property has played an important role in control methodologies such as gainscheduling controls or robust controls for systems having slowly varying parameters. We begin with a review of the first extension, which shows that the inputs may vary fastly, but once its ‘average’ is slowly varying, then the same stability property still holds. The second extension deals with the case when a (transcritical) bifurcation occurs so that the assumptions of the stability property are violated. We propose a Jump & Wait strategy which will still guarantee the stability property even under this case. Finally we prove that the Jump & Wait strategy can be employed not with the input itself but with the average of the input if the proposed structural condition is satisfied.

   There has been much recent interest in the long-term non-progressor (LTNP), who has been infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but does not proceed to AIDS. Under the assumption that a mathematical model describing the HIV infection and drug effects is true for real systems, we claim that it is possible to steer the state of any patients to that of LTNP if the model parameters belong to the proposed parameter intervals. Once the state is transferred close to LTNP, CTL memory is established and the viral load remains very low level even after the medication is stopped. In order to justify the claim, we first analyze the stability and the bifurcation of the model and show that there exists an equilibria curve towards LTNP, which is stable for all fixed constant inputs except some singular points. Then, we propose a new treatment strategy based on a useful property of Non-vanishing Basin of Attraction (NvBA)-stability. An extensive simulation study is also included to validate the proposed treatment for various initial conditions and to show the robustness against the parameter uncertainty. From a practical perspective, it deserves further investigation whether the proposed treatment strategy could switch a patient into LTNP in the real world.
